Premature Ejaculation Treatment: Drugs That May Help Treat Premature Ejaculation

While learning ejaculatory control is the best premature ejaculation treatment, it may not be possible or effective for all men with this problem. Thus, some men may need to turn to medications for relief for this problem.

One important thing to keep in mind is that there are no specific medications to treat premature ejaculation. The most commonly prescribed drugs to help men manage the problem are actually used to treat other conditions.

Men with premature ejaculation are usually given antidepressant drugs such as Prozac and Zoloft. These drugs may take several weeks to work and, once the problem is addressed, need to be taken daily or premature ejaculation will recur. They may also have side effects ranging from nausea and drowsiness to decreased or increased sexual interest and impotence.

In some cases, men suffering from premature ejaculation have also successfully used medications such as Viagra and Cialis. These drugs may help men with premature ejaculation problems who also suffer from erectile dysfunction.

If the man does not want to use drugs, or has a condition that may prevent use of these drugs, there are also premature ejaculation treatment options that involve desensitization. For example, there are local anesthetics such as lidocaine which can be applied to the underside of the penis to reduce sensation. These are usually applied thirty minutes before sex and then washed off five to ten minutes before intercourse.

A desensitization technique that does not require drugs involves the man masturbating some hours before having sex. Many men also find they have better control if they have sex again shortly after the first session.
